Proposed bill in Georgia will make it harder for employees in certain sectors to unionize
State legislators in Georgia are working to pass a bill that will make it more difficult for workers in certain industries to unionize. The bill targets companies in Georgia that receive economic incentives from the state. For workers to unionize at these companies, a formal secret-ballot election must be held, and workers cannot file for unionization through card checks. Card checks are a common way that workers gain union representation, and card checks are when enough workers sign union cards, and a company voluntarily recognizes the union. Opponents of the bill state that the legislation violated current federal labor laws. The National Labor Relations Act allows companies to voluntarily recognize unions if enough employees are in support of unionization.
