Proposed merger between iRobot and Amazon terminated, results in layoffs
An upcoming merger between iRobot and Amazon was recently called off, and iRobot announced that around 350 jobs will be cut this year. The merger between the two companies did not end up happening because of raising concerns about the specific mergers. Concerns included the possibility that the merger could make it harder for competitors in the vacuum robot industry. The proposed merger received backlash from both the European Commission as well as the Federal Trade Commission. The layoffs will cut approximately one-third of iRobot’s total workforce. iRobot will receive $94 million from Amazon due to the termination of the merger, and iRobot states that it will use the money to innovate and produce additional products in the future.
