Puerto Rico unions protest pay cut for public employees
A legion of unionized Puerto Rican workers took to the streets to protest the commonwealth’s fiscal oversight board, otherwise known as the JSF, demand that public employees work two days less a month with simultaneous reductions in wage. JSF officials, who are appointed by the President of the United States, announced their plan to take Puerto Rico Governor Ricky Rossello to court after he rejected their proposal. UTIER, the Puerto Rican Electrical Industry and Irrigation Workers Union, responded to the proposal with a 24-hour strike. The union says JSF’s intention is to privatize the state-owned electrical utility company, which is deeply in debt as a result of Puerto Rico’s ongoing recession.
