Punching in past 65: Older-worker rate highest since 1962
According to government data released on Friday, 19 percent of Americans 65 and older are still employed -- the highest rate since 1962. This increased rate is partially due to longer life expectancies, but also because many cannot afford to retire at 65. Over 25 percent of workers over 55 have less than $10,000 saved, and almost a third of those workers expect to work until they are at least 70 years old. The report on Friday follows Congress's decision to overturn a rule that was designed to aid states in providing workers access to retirement plans.
