Qatar Called to Publish World Cup Worker Death Figures
In the wake of an investigation into bribery charges involving the country's 2022 World Cup bid, Qatar is facing increase pressure from labor and human rights groups to release numbers regarding worker deaths related to World Cup construction. Labor observers estimate as many as 900 workers per year could die in the run up to the World Cup, but Qatar has steadfastly refused to publish any statistics. An estimated 1.5 million foreign workers are living in the country, and suffer from lack of health services and dangerous work sites. In an official statement, Qatar claimed that there had not been a single fatality related to World Cup construction, and that it was not obligated to publish transparent figures.
