Qatar detained two Germans who filmed World Cup labour conditions
The spotlight on the abuse of migrant workers in Qatar grew hotter as two German broadcasters claimed they were detained by authorities for documenting migrant working conditions. While the Germans stated they were treated well, their camera equipment was confiscated and they were held for over 24 hours for questioning. Some 1.2 million migrant workers have come to Qatar for work building the necessary infrastructure there in preparation for the 2022 World Cup. International trade unions have decried working conditions in Qatar, estimating up to 4,000 workers could die before the World Cup if the situation is not improved.
