Qatar warned over World Cup labor laws
A new report about Qatar's employment practices is leading some to ask the soccer association FIFA to pressure the Qatari government into honoring its promise to reform labor laws in preparation for the 2022 Soccer World Cup. 94% of the workers in Qatar are migrant workers. The current system requires workers to be sponsored by local employers, a practice that workers say leads to unpaid wages and unsafe working and living conditions. The Qatari government said that they have not received any complaints of forced labor and that the possibility is 'inconceivable.' Part of Qatar's bid for the World Cup included a promise to establish labor standards for construction related to the World Cup.
