Qatar's new labor law won't stop abuses of migrant workers, say rights groups
Qatar's new labor law will go into effect tomorrow, revising the widely criticized sponsorship requirement that migrant workers are subject to. According to Amnesty International, the new law will eliminate the role of sponsors, but employees will still have to ask their employers for permission to change jobs or leave the country. The policy shift is most likely due to the nation's commitment to host the World Cup in 2022, a project that will require mass amount of foreign workers.
