Raiderette lawsuit accuses team of violating labor laws
A cheerleader for the Oakland Raiders, mentioned only as Lacy T., has sued the team, accusing the organization of minimum wage violations and other labor laws. Lacy T.?s lawyers have said that violations of this nature are rampant among NFL teams. Among the Raiderette?s required job duties is to attend at least 10 charity events, practice with the squad for at least 3 hours per week, and work for about 9 hours per home game, although other events may be requested on top of that. The cheerleaders make approximately $1,250 per season which turns out to be less than $5.00 per hour, well below the state and federal minimum wage. In addition to wage violations, the Raiderettes are required to pay some of their own businesses expenses amounting to about $650 per season. The lawsuit is awaiting a hearing from a California Superior Court to determine whether it can be certified as a class action.
