Raley's, union workers reach contract agreement
Workers at California grocery chain Raley's have reached a tentative agreement. The agreement came after a negotiating session that began Sunday and lasted until Tuesday, and ends a nine-day strike at the company. Workers returned to the stores after the agreement was reached. The company had hired some replacement workers to man the stores during the strike. The United Food and Commercial Workers, which represents the workers, says that the agreement preserves the health care plan, a sticking point for the union. The company says that they were able to get the lower costs needed to compete with other, nonunion grocery stores.
