'Rank and Yank' Retains Vocal Fans
While some companies have changed the way they evaluate employees, others are sticking with their system of forced rankings. In forced ranking systems, a specific number of employees must be assigned to each category. A study found that the number of firms using forced ranking has dropped to 14% from 42% in 2009, but some say that companies have just changed the name of their evaluation systems, not the system itself. Critics say that forced ranking can cause problems among employees and managers, who may have trouble fitting employees into the categories. But supporters of the system say that it helps give employees an idea of where they stand.
