Recent US job market trends include decreases in job openings, increases in total hiring, more layoffs
The number of job openings posted by employers in the United States has decreased in recent months, and this is likely due to lower demand for workers. The US Labor Department’s report detailing the country’s employment and hiring statistics found that 7.7 million job openings were posted in July, while 7.9 million openings were posted in June. At the beginning of 2024, the number of job openings posted was close to 9 million. The report also found that layoffs during the summer months increased, and total hiring increased as well. The number of workers who quit also increased, which represents a healthy job market, because when workers quit, they tend to have another job lined up or believe that they are able to find another job in a short time period. These factors are signs that the job market is in good condition and US workers have confidence in the market.
