Retaliation at Issue in Discrimination Case
A case brought before the Supreme Court raises the question of whether the law known as Title IX provides protection against retaliation for those who come forward with claims of discrimination. Title IX prohibits sex discrimination in schools and colleges that receive federal money. The case was brought by a girls? basketball coach of a high school in Birmingham, Ala., who lost his coaching position after complaining that the school gave the boys' team favored conditions. The court, which has grown increasingly reluctant to accept interpretations that go beyond the actual language of a statute, is likely to be closely divided on this issue.
