Review of Carpenters' Union Shows Corruption Persists
A year after the the New York City District Council of Carpenters was placed under supervision by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America after its leader was charged with racketeering, a new assessment says that little has changed. While nine officials have pleaded guilty in a civil racketeering lawsuit, there are concerns over the progress that the supervisor appointed by the Carpenters. The union has defended the supervisor's work this far, saying that weeding out corruption was a work in progress.
