S. African broadcaster faces blackout amid strike, citizens say
Employees at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), represented by the Communication Workers Union, began striking for higher wages today, causing further stress at the SABC, which has asked for a costly government bailout in the current economic times. Over two-thirds of SABC's employees will participate in the strike, which includes, according to union General-Secretary Gallant Roberts, plans for lunch-time pickets, go-slows, no overtime, a march to SABC regional headquarters, and a stay-away. The march is planned for July 10, with the stay-away to begin after. Due to the immensity of the strike, SABC may not be able to broadcast tonight, resulting in potential blackout of all three of its channels.
