Sales of Guinness slip as Irish pubs decline
Sales of Guinness are falling as pubs are facing difficulty bringing in customers in Ireland, due in no small part to the difficulties facing modern employees. Traditionally, the pub was seen as the haven of Irish workers, wherein they might relax after a long day at the office or factory. Yet the modern Celtic Tiger has swept away much of this tradition, bringing with it economic prosperity but also long commutes, busy days, and no longer much time to stop by the pub for a pint or five. As such, beer consumption is falling dramatically and pubs sit half-full; when the find the time away from their jobs to relax, people are also drinking more coffee and fine wine.
