San Diego County's biggest union announces strike date
On Tuesday night, Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 221 of San Diego County, California announced that it will go on strike on September 12 and 13. This decision was reached in the wake of the union’s heated bargaining sessions, or lack thereof, with the county. Parties from both sides have made accusations of negotiating in bad faith, with over 200 individuals excitedly supporting union leaders on Marina Village on Mission Bay at a rally of sorts when the news of the planned strike was made public. These strikes could potentially devastate the county, as the members of SEIU Local 221 comprise more than half of all county employees. Should both sides fail to reach a deal before the September strikes, it will be the first time the union has staged a strike against the county in over 20 years. While the union clearly wants to send a strong message, both sides express ultimately the same goal: to reach a fair agreement.
