Santa Clara County schools send out more than 1,000 layoff notices
Over 1,000 teachers and other workers in South Bay received layoff notices this week. To blame is state budget cuts, the global economic recession, and older workers delaying retirement. All of these factors mean steeper cutbacks, particularly in younger staff members since layoffs are based on seniority. California requires that teachers be notified of potential layoffs by March 15, but the final numbers won?t be confirmed for another two months. The California Teachers Association expects as many as 25,000 layoff notices to be mailed statewide by Sunday (the 15th). Many protests have been planned for today as a result.
