Saudi Arabia: World Cup bidder Saudi Arabia accused of abusing migrant workers ahead of FIFA decision
The Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI) has filed a complaint with the
International Labor Organization (ILO) alleging severe human rights abuses by Saudi Arabia
against migrant workers as FIFA nears confirmation of the country as the host for the 2034
World Cup. The accusations include forced labor-like conditions, wage theft, and physical and
sexual violence, particularly against female and domestic workers. These allegations come as
Saudi Arabia, which is currently planning significant infrastructure projects for the World Cup,
faces scrutiny over its labor practices. Critics argue this situation could be another case of
"sportswashing" by Saudi Arabia to enhance its international image amidst ongoing human rights
concerns. The complaint is supported by major human rights organizations and demands
immediate attention from FIFA and the global community.
