School Cuts Spur Michigan Conflict
The Michigan Education Association began polling its members last month about possible responses to the cuts Governor Rick Snyder is proposing for education. In order to close a $1.8 billion deficit, the Governor has proposed a 4% cut to education funding,, as well as cutting pay for public workers and eliminating a tax credit for low income people. The union says that the poll is a way to measure support for various responses. The Michigan legislature has introduced a law that will inflict harsh penalties for any teachers who break the law and strike, including taking away their certification. The Republicans say that the teachers are being used in the unions' political games, and that they should not break the law. the Michigan Education Association says that it will finish its poll by April 15, and decide where to go from there.
