Schools in Scotland are at risk of closure due to potential strike action
Various unionized support staff members in schools around Scotland are planning to walk out to demand greater wage increases. The main union leading the strike action is the Unison union, which represents thousands of support employees who work in 24 different regional councils. The Unite union and the General, Municipal, and Boilermakers union have pledged to strike alongside Unison. These unions represent cleaners, janitors, caterers, school assistants, and administrative staff and these workers are asking the Scottish government and the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities for pay raises and measures to improve working conditions. The Scottish government and the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities proposed a 5.5% pay increase, but the offer was rejected by the unions, and if an agreement isn’t reached soon hundreds of schools in Scotland will close due to strike action.
