Seattle implements law that sets minimum wage for mobile app delivery workers
A new law that sets a minimum wage for delivery drivers who work for mobile apps in Seattle, Washington recently went into effect. The bill established a minimum wage for gig workers who deliver food, packages, and groceries in the Seattle area and was passed in 2022. Mobile delivery apps such as Doordash and Instacart will be required to pay workers the equivalent of Seattle’s minimum wage, which is just over 19 dollars per hour. Previous to the bill being passed, companies were allowed to pay mobile app delivery workers under the minimum wage because they were considered independent contractors. Companies state that the law will raise costs and the costs will be passed onto consumers through additional fees.
