SEIU to Represent Non-Tenure-Track Faculty
Non-tenure track and adjunct faculty at Fordham University overwhelmingly voted in favor of representation by the SEIU. The election results released were released Tuesday and showed that 94% of the 905 eligible employees voted in favor of the union. The SEIU says that since 2013 it has partnered with more than a dozen Catholic universities to negotiate higher wages and greater job security. Negotiations will be opened for two contracts, one for full-time non-tenure track professors and another for part-time adjuncts. Tuesday’s announcement was the culmination of a long struggle between the board and non-tenure track faculty. and last April a demonstration was staged where faculty disrupted a prospective student luncheon, entered the event and pulled fire alarms. Shortly after the university issued a statement saying that it would not oppose or interfere with the unionization effort.
