SEIU's food service workers approve Mayo proposal
A heated battle between food service workers and a Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN is nearing a close after SEIU Healthcare Minnesota members voted to approve a compromise proposed by the Clinic. The vote was the first of two required to approve the compromise, with a second vote to be held among the union's full membership soon. At issue has been a plan by the Mayo Clinic to outsource jobs to Morrison Healthcare in an effort to improve patient satisfaction and make its food service operation more efficient. The compromise would require Mayo to address compensation deficiencies among staff, in exchange for which SEIU would withdraw it's charges of unfair labor practices with the NLRB. The proposal comes after six months of bitter acrimony that included picketing and more than a dozen bargaining sessions.
