In a major victory for organized labor and working families, California moved one step closer to becoming the first state to offer paid family leave yesterday, when the State Senate passed legislation guaranteeing partially paid leave in a vote that split almost exactly along party lines. The bill guarantees up to twelve weeks of disability pay for workers who take time of to care for newborn infants or seriously ill immediate family members or domestic partners.
