Senate approves workers comp bill
The Oklahoma State Senate passed a measure yesterday that changes the way workers are compensated in the state - specifically how workers comp attorneys are paid when they win a case. The resolution places limits on how much a lawyer can earn from winning a workers comp case. Democrats are afraid that this measure will discourage attorneys from taking on workers comp cases in the first place, asking 'what lawyer will take on a case, where he gets little to nothing, even if he wins everything the worker is entitled to?' On the other hand, Republicans generally supported the bill, saying that the resolution will help injured workers hold on to more of the benefits they are entitled to. One Republican Senator, a former lawyer, even endorsed the bill, saying the current system is broken. Many believe that smaller fee percentages will actually motivate lawyers to work harder for their clients, in order to earn the most money for themselves.
