Senate immigration bill could double guest workers
An analysis of the proposed Senate immigration bill by the Center for Immigration Studies suggests that the legislation could nearly double the number of guest workers allowed into the United States. The CIS study says the bill could add as many as 620,833 more temporary workers to the 700,000 estimated temporary workers in the country last year. In what was a compromise between parties on opposite sides of the aisle, leading Democrats accepted an increase in the number of guest workers in exchange for an ameliorated path to legalization for illegal immigrants. High skilled workers let in under the H-1B program would comprise almost one third of the added workers, according to the study.
