Seniors and retirees step up hunt for jobs in bad economy
In the last few years, the general trend has been for seniors to work longer, thanks in large part to increased health and a consequent desire to stay connected and productive. In the past few months, the financial crisis has seen a sudden surge in the number of seniors remaining in or returning to the workforce. Online job sites, such as Seniors4Hire.org or RetireeWorkforce.com have sprung up and flourished. Visitation on RetirementJobs.com doubled to 400,000 a month in August and September. RetirementJobs? career counselor Bob Skladany says there is still an abundant market for senior employees, though some employers are wary of hiring older workers, concerned about health care and outdated skills. On the plus side, older workers are often seen as more dependable and loyal than younger generations.
