Sensing the Moment Favors Them, Unions in Albany Push for Gains
New Yorks labor unions are taking advantage of the states new political uncertainty by pushing their agendas with newfound vigor. With a weak governor and state senator incumbents and candidates on both sides of the aisle clamoring for support, unions are finding themselves stronger than ever, and are pushing for firmer health benefits and better pensions across the board. Although Governor David Paterson has backed recent initiatives by the state's teachers union, his drive for fiscal responsibility may clash with unions and their supporters, further weakening his position.
