Significant increases in strikes and labor activity have not managed to raise low union membership
Thousands of workers have participated in strike action in 2023, such as actors and screenwriters in Hollywood, UPS delivery drivers, nurses, teachers, and other workers in various industries. Strike activity has steadily increased in the past years, but union membership has remained at historically low levels. Around 10% of the American workforce is currently represented by unions, a much lower percentage compared to the late 1900s, when approximately 30% of workers were union members. The low level of unionized Americans can be attributed to various factors, including the decreasing workforces in sectors that used to be strong union industries and an increase in anti-union practices from company management. Various laws have also been passed that negatively impacted union activity, such as Right to Work laws that provide nonunion workers with union representation in union workplaces.
