Skills gaps and labor shortages cause Germany to modernize its immigration policies to attract more foreign workers
There is currently a massive worker shortage in Germany, as open job vacancies continue to rise each year and the country's labor market struggles with an aging population. As a result, there is a high demand for skilled labor and professionals in Germany, particularly in the health, social care, and education sectors. There are also large skills labor gaps affecting construction, architecture, law, engineering, and science and IT. This has led the government to begin simplifying its immigration system by implementing a points-based visa system to make it easier for skilled workers to move to the country and increase the number of individuals enrolled in local academic and vocational training. It is hoped that these changes to immigration laws and the favorable work conditions and high quality in life in Germany will encourage skilled workers to relocate as well as retain migrant workers to become citizens.
