Some unions could get break from health care fees
Initially the Obama administration had given unions guidance that their self-administered healthcare insurance plans full of enrollees who were part of the union?s membership would be subject to reinsurance fees just as the health insurance companies would be. It would now appear that new regulations would exempt ?certain self-insured, self-administered plans? from paying the reinsurance fees during 2015 and 2016. Experts are still unsure, but many believe that most union healthcare insurance plans would fit under this regulation, making greater the potential for labor unions to give more of the population coverage, both union members and unaffiliated persons. The regulation is still in a review period and is likely to be refined or become better defined in the near future.
