A Dell computer plant in North Carolina is laying off around 300 workers, sources said yesterday. The company has not yet confirmed these numbers, though the firm is in the process of reducing its workforce globally. Dell hopes to decrease costs, remain competitive, and streamline operations. The plant in North Carolina was relatively new ? opening in 2005 ? and enjoyed $318 million in grants and tax incentives to open there. However, the plant didn?t employ quite as many people as expected, with the new layoffs adding further damage. The mayor of Winston-Salem (the location of the plant) noted that Dell must employ 1,700 workers by 2010 or repay a portion of the tax-breaks it received.
