South African Government Meets Labor Unions as Strike Threatens to Spread
As part of efforts to end a 10 day strike by South African public workers, government officials met with union leaders last night to try and find a solution. As the strike wears on, more industries are joining, with Cosatu, one of the largest groups, calling for a nation-wide strike on September 2. The National Union of Mineworkers released a statement in support of the strike today, and say that they can shut down mining, construction and energy if they join the strike. Leaders say that they will take any new offers to their members. The government's last offer was a 7% wage increase and a 700 rand housing allowance. Unions are asking for a 8.6% pay increase and a 1000 rand housing allowance.
