South African Labor Unions Call for Calm on Farm Strike
With South African farm workers entering into their sixth day of a strike over minimum wages, those involved called for peace between protesters and the police. Unions and farms have both called for the police to be cautious about the force that they use. The strike originally began in November, with workers demanding a rise in the minimum wage, but was suspended for negotiations. The strike resumed on January 9. Government officials called for the strike to end, calling the strike illegal.
