Sri Lanka union protester dies, police chief steps down
A Sri Lankan union protester died after being shot by police during a protest. The head of the police force resigned, and two officers were taken into custody. The actions of the police during the protest caused 26 unions to call for continuous strikes until the officers were punished. The protest was over a proposed pension plan that both the unions and employers opposed, and which the government has now abandoned. The unions say that the actions taken by the government were a way to appease protesters, and anger over the government's failure to give wage and benefit increases. Over 200 people were in the protest.
