St. Joseph Mercy plans job cuts at 4 facilities
St. Joseph Mercy Health System in Michigan has announced plans to make cuts at four of its facilities in the state this month, in Ann Arbor, Saline, Howell, and Livonia. The four locations combined are projected to fall over 50 million dollars short of their proposed budget for the coming fiscal year. The cuts will eliminate the equivalent of 350 full-time positions, or about 6% of the facilities' combined workforce, at the hospitals, though at least one third of those cuts will probably come from laying off part-time or temporary workers, and from reducing workers' overtime. The cuts are expected to save around $25 million for the Health System next year. The company has reportedly discussed other money-saving measures to further cushion against the budget deficit.
