State teachers union ousts president
New York?s United Federation of Teachers has voted to remove President Richard Iannuzzi in favor of Westchester local leader Karen Magee. Almost 3,000 delegates voted to oust Iannuzzi after having served nine years and only being the union?s second president in its 42-year history. Magee gained major support of university professors in major upstate cities as well as her home district and many of New York City?s districts. Some of those who voted for Magee were confident that she would be more willing to fight some of Governor Cuomo?s policies like teacher-evaluation systems and Common Core standards, which are less desirable to the teachers? union.
