States drop out of Race to the Top
After Delaware and Tennessee became the only two states awarded funding from the Race to the Top program in March, some states are dropping out of the second round. Indiana state officials cited union opposition as the main reason they were dropping out of the running, saying that the state and the unions had different priories, while the vice-president of the Indiana State Teachers Association said that they would not give their support because they were not allowed to read the first round application, and that when they were given access to the application, there were several parts they had issues with, including performance-based teacher pay and tying student success to teachers. Minnesota is also having trouble garnering teacher support for its application, which includes eliminating teacher tenure. Vermont and Kansas said that they pulled their applications because of the difficulty of reforms at the local level.
