Strike could be near for Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons workers, union warns
According to the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 770 president Rick Icaza, 62,000 unionized employees may go on strike at Ralphs, Vons, and Albertsons supermarkets over healthcare coverage. After the expiration of the union's contract, the supermarket chains are proposing changes that could make healthcare payments as high as 50% of the employee's take-home pay. While the negotiation process may lead to a peaceful outcome, the UFCW has already started making strike preparations.
