Strike Looms at United Airlines as Mechanics Reject Contract Deal
More than 93% of United’s mechanics voted against a new contract agreement on Tuesday; the union will now seek approval from the U.S. National Mediation Board to release them from further mediation, which would allow them to strike. United has been trying to conclude an agreement with its maintenance staff since its merger with Continental Airlines in 2010; its latest offer included an immediate 25% wage increase and an average $9,000 bonus. If the National Mediation Board approves the union’s request to cease talks, United and the union will have 30 days to reach a deal before the U.S. executive branch or Congress is allowed to intervene.
