Strike notice rescinded at Alcan
After giving notice of a strike at the Alcan Rolled Products plant in Ravenswood, West Virginia, the members of the United Steel Workers agreed to rescind the notice and go back to the bargaining table, in a move applauded by union leaders, the company, and local and state politicians. Workers rejected a contract that would have given them a $0.35 per hour raise, improved the pension plan and continued health care benefits. The company had also said that it would invest $86 million in improvements to the factory, as well as providing layoff protections for hourly workers. Local officials said that they were happy the strike had been called off, and hoped that the disagreement would be resolved through negotiations. The plant employs around 700 union workers.
