Students help adjunct faculty in fight to form unions
As the wages of adjunct professors becomes a nationwide issue, the teachers are finding an energized ally in their students. Adjunct professors, unlike tenure or tenure-track professors, are paid often by the credit hour or a low flat rate for each semester or for each class that they teach. These educators are often unable to live on only one college?s wages and so must teach classes on multiple campuses just to survive. Students at Northeastern University are banding together to support and promote the well-being of their adjunct professors. The students organized events and a flash mob to get the word out to fellow students and the administration. Since students are the most vital source of income for most universities, their support may help push the livable-wage debate in favor of the adjuncts.
