Students, Staff Rally For Fair Contract Negotiations
At noon yesterday Cornell workers, students, and United Auto Workers local 2300 officials met in front of Day Hall to rally in favor of a fair contract for Cornell employees. The group chanted and held signs promoting a living wage before marching to Ho Plaza, where President Skorton was promoting a diversity event, to present him with a letter and brief film titled ?In the Shadow of the Tower?. The event was hosted by the Cornell Organization for Labor Action in conjunction with the Cornell Democrats in order to draw attention to upcoming contract negotiations between Cornell and the UAW ? which represents most Cornell staff. Organizers emphasized the importance of student involvement, but the task is more difficult since negotiations occur in the summer. Meanwhile President Skorton said he welcomed student opinions, but that negotiations are ultimately between Vice President for Human Resources Mary Opperman and the UAW.
