Supporters rally for Central Falls teachers before Regents meeting
Controversy continues this week in Rhode Island over a proposal to fire the entire faculty of low-performing high school Central Falls High School. As per the proposal, all the Central Falls High teachers were let go last week, infuriating teachers and teachers unions across the state. Supporters turned out Thursday evening before a meeting of the Board of Regents, wearing red in support of the laid-off teachers. Over 500 were in attendance. Though termination notices have already gone out, talks between the school board and the union continue, and some say there may be a light at the end of the tunnel for some teachers. If the two sides can come to an agreement regarding ways to improve test scores, etc. at the school, Superintendent Frances Gallo has said she will consider reinstating up to 93 teachers. However, in a statement after the rally, Gallo claimed to feel less hopeful, as she believed the union would have canceled the rally.
