Sutter denies closure rumors
Labor leaders and several San Francisco elected officials say that Sutter Health intends to dismantle St. Luke's Hospital, but California Pacific Medical Center, the Sutter affiliate that took it over in January, denies the accusation. SEIU United Healthcare Workers-West, the union representing St. Luke's service and technical workers, plans to picket the facility on Cesar Chavez Street Monday at 2 p.m. They'll be joined by San Francisco Supervisor Tom Ammiano, union leaders and possibly other elected officials. SEIU unsuccessfully opposed Sutter's acquisition of St. Luke's, long an independent hospital, in 2001. During the past several years SEIU and other critics have claimed that Sutter Health's plan is eventually to close the hospital -- which the owner denies.
