Swiss vote to limit foreign workers captures growing European fears about immigration
The Swiss have conducted a vote which would limit the workers from other Euro-zone countries which would be allowed to work in Switzerland. The vote was meat with threats from other European Union leaders, but represents a growing sentiment in other Euro nations. The open-border rules come directly from a treaty with the European Union, which means that since Switzerland isn?t a part of the European Union officially, it can?t be removed from the trading and economic bloc. The policy change could, however, result in the Swiss being deprived of open access to consumers across Europe. The vote also makes more salient the fears that the trade pact being discussed with the U.S. could fall flat if nationalist politicians are elected in May.
