T unions lose on coverage battle
After almost two dozen unions representing Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority workers sued in 2009 over changes to their health care plan, a judge has dismissed their lawsuit. The ruling allows the state to switch employees' health plans to the state employee insurance plan, which will save the state around $30 million a year. State officials said that they were pleased by the ruling, saying that the change will save money and reduce complications. The unions say that they will appeal the ruling, and that they understand the financial issues that the state is under, but that management should bargain with them over changes, not make unilateral decisions.
