Target Bends to Labor, Tells Contractors to Meet With Unions
The major retailer, Target, is rewriting some of the rules it uses to select and retain outside contractors who clean stores. In the Twin Cities Target is requiring its janitorial vendors to comply with federal and Minnesota labor laws, establish a safety committee with employees choosing half of the members, hold a union management meeting at least once per year, and give all employees the option of taking one day off each week. In addition to those changes, Target has strongly advised all of its vendors to reach deals with unions that are seeking to represent their workers. Although Target is requiring many new changes for its vendors, the retailer has also mandated that these changes should not ?interfere? economically ?with Target?s operations?. Despite urging vendors to take steps to better relations with unions, Target remains entirely union-free.
