Target is giving it workers Thanksgiving Day off
On Monday, Target announced they will be closing their stores on Thanksgiving Day, not just this year but permanently. Target’s CEO said in a note to employees, “What started as a temporary measure driven by the pandemic is now our new standard.” A senior equity research analyst says that she predicts most other chain and big-box stores will eventually do the same since it is easier than ever for people to shop from their sofas and especially now that employees have more leverage than employers in this tight labor market. Labor advocates expressed relief but also shared doubt that shutting stores on Thanksgiving Day will become a long-term commitment for companies.
